Obituary for Doug Robertson

Douglas Robertson, 80, died October 22, 2019 at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa. Doug was a lifelong resident of Ottumwa, Iowa, where he was a funeral director at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home for over 50 years.

Douglas Emery Robertson was born October 7, 1939, to Willis and Milre (McCoy) Robertson. Although he started school two years late due to illness and injury, he graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1959. Doug continued his education, graduating from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) with a degree in chemistry and Gupton-Jones College in Dallas, Texas, with certifications in embalming and funeral directing.

Doug married Diana Harper on August 6, 1966, and they had a daughter, Paula, in 1975.

Doug was active in the Ottumwa community as a member of the Ottumwa Noon Lions and Rotary Club and serving on civic boards such as the Southeast Iowa Blood Center (now the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center), Hospice, and Ottumwa Ambassadors.

Doug is survived by his daughter, Paula Buck, son-in-law Dan, and grandchildren Kate and Craig of Anamosa, Iowa. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Frances Robertson of Deer Park, New York, four nieces, Kaysi (Robb) Morse of Honeoye, New York, Linda (Sam) Welsh-Lyckholm of Crestline, California, Deb (Jim) Vernice of Smithtown, New York, Jill (Adam) Shilling of Wilmington, Delaware, a nephew, Scott (Doris) Robertson, of Huntersville, North Carolina, ten great-nieces and nephews, and Jim Wehr of Liberty, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Phillip Robertson, his sister and brother-in-law Peggy Jean and Darrell Welsh, and his wife, Diana.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa. Burial will be at the Ottumwa Cemetery. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties or Heartland Humane Society.
